So, cat-owning folks, you may want to read through here:

http://issendai.livejournal.com/601049.html

Purina has a whole host of sub-brands, including Friskies, our cats' meal of choice -- well, not anymore.

Just called my mom and had her take the cats' food away. They'll get a new bag of noms tomorrow. I just hope that Petsmart will refund us on the unused cans. As for new stuff, I'm thinking Mousie might like a big ol' bag of Royal Canin for Christmas. :D

that scares the living shit out of me. D: I'm going to be going through my dry cat food with a fine tooth comb. DX

Glad to see you're still alive and kicking! I was worried about you with the Santa Ana winds and all the hulk smashing they've been doing! O_O

Thing is, I'm guessing that the bugs they were finding in the feed were likely either flour moths (which you tend to find in cereal grains), or "seed bugs," the small, black click beetle-looking things that turn up at the bottom of bird cages. Either way, unlikely contenders for cat illness. There are bugs that get into cattle feed that will kill a cow, but I'm unfamiliar with any that do this to domestic pets.

Which, all in all, makes this more frightening.

As for the winds... Yep. Lots of Hulk smashing, but, blessedly, very little damage on my end. Some of the cars parked down by the hospital, however...

You know what food is really good? Costco's brand, Kirkland. Seriously. It's got chicken as the first ingredient, not corn and filler like that like most grocery store brands. Yet despite this, it's also incredibly cheap. Mind you, the smallest size bag is 15 or 20 lbs. But it's awesome.

Not to get too graphic, but it's AMAZING how little poop my cats produce on a "meatier" dry food compared to the "grainy" ones.

I told my mom about this delicious fact, and she will look into it when she makes her monthly trip to the Company of Cost. :D

High meat content in a carnivore diet is good for them -- who knew? XD

Yeh, we kind of descended on the hapless storeperson ...

Now, if only the furry little fraggers would eat it >.>

It takes a few days, sometimes. I tend to resort to bribery, myself.

"Don't you want some? It's good!"

"Meh."

"Come on, Mouse! It's noms!"

"Fssst."

"...I'll give you pizza if you eat this catfood."

"...nom nom nom."

Yeh, we're just snarking the cats and putting the food out anyway.

They'll peck at the dry food at least, which is a better sign than the last time I tried to switch a cat's food *facepalms at memory*

Ashura was firmly in the camp of "switch my food and I will bitchily starve myself to death, spiting you every step of the way such that it takes you a day to get me to even eat my old food again."

This combined well with "I will only eat the cheapest food you find", let me tell you.

Oh, lord. Ashura and Timmy, our cranky-ass box turtle, would have been BFFs. He pulls the same shit every year.

No, really. And kept stealing my Batman books and lying on them.

*tosses out the Friskies, scrubs out the cat dishes and refills them with my lunchmeat after checking the ingrediants*

Issendai has an LJ? I did not know.

What's Royal Canin? Nevermind, I googled it. THen I poked around their website. then I poked around other cat food sites. Then I went to Pet Valu and spent lots of money.

Royal Canin isn't the best catfood around, nutritionally-- they have brown/brewer's rice or corn gluten meal as their second ingredient a lot of the time --but Mousie absolutely loves the stuff. I use it as a "sometimes" food, and she often gets a bag at Christmas.

My mom eventually settled on Authority for their dry food (first two ingredients were MEAT and MORE MEAT), and she grabbed a few cans of the wet, as well. We'll see how that goes.

What did you two find? :D ?

Yeah, we ended up not getting that brand, in fact.

Performatrin Ultra for the kibble (seems to be the store brand?) and a selection of cans to find soemthing they'll FUCKING EAT ALREADY: differnet flavours of Performatrin Ultra, Performatrin non-ultra, and Blue Buffalo. Also, a guy we used to live with, with whom I share a bus ride with at least weekly, told be about the organic stuff his gastro-intestinally-challenged kitty eats, which is apaprently available from one of the local grocery big chains. Research and experimentation continue...

(The kibble is shaped like stars and crescent moons! Sailor Senshi Salmon Select! XD)
