Today, I got up and fed the birds. Dumb was upside-down in the nest in the same position I'd put her last night. When I went to get her out, she couldn't even right herself. I had to dump the entire nest over to get to her.
I fed her, gave her some water, and wrapped her in a towel.
Then we went to the Humane Society.
We buried her next to Hubert and Jackie.

Finch Update
Dec. 28th, 2008 02:50 pmI got up this morning to check on the finches and found Dumb upside-down at the bottom of the cage. I thought she was dead. She wasn't.
I put her into the nest, but she fell back out a minute later and was upside-down again. This went on a few more times before I opted to just hold her. I wrapped her in a towel to keep her warm and petted her for almost three hours. She went to sleep a few times, but would wake up at regular intervals to have a small freak out. She tried to run -- her legs worked, but her feet wouldn't grip -- and ended up upside-down, twitching.
By this time I realized that her end was not going to be quick. The Humane Society isn't open today, the nearest vet that takes birds is in Long Beach and I doubt she'd make the trip. So I dipped a Q-tip in water and started hydrating her. Then I spent half an hour holding her upright so she could eat some seed. She's lost a lot of control in her beak; it took her almost a minute sometimes to eat a single seed. But she still managed to get quite a bit down.
I honestly don't know what I'm going to do. There's something seriously wrong with her, but she's still able to eat and drink -- granted, with help. She can't perch, can't walk, can barely beep...

Went to see Hissy today to get my camera back. Traffic on the way home SUCKED.

There was a five-or-so car pileup on the opposite side of the freeway that blocked things up for at least a mile. A whole mile of stop and go behind a semi truck with only one working brake light. Ugh.
And... Dumb, the fluffier and less-bald part of my finch duo, is sick. I doubt she'll make it through the night. She'd fallen to the bottom of the cage and couldn't even muster the will to fight me when I picked her up. I put her in the nest with Dumber, who is keeping watch like a guard dog. She'll die happy, I think.
Five is pretty old for a zebra finch.

How sensitive are birds to burning paraffin and/or kerosene?
I have one electric lamp in my room and two oil lamps. During the summer, it's too hot to read during the day, so I like to read at night. But the electric lamp is exceedingly bright and lacks a dimmer, and I didn't want to disturb Blue or the Dumbi while I read. So I wanted to get out one of my oil lamps.
Then I realized that I hadn't actually used them in my room since getting parakeets. I know the Dumbi aren't sensitive to it, but would Blue be harmed by the fumes?
Anyone?
