So, I'm taking an illustration class, because I needed the units and it seemed like a good idea at the time. Some time in the last week, I injured my right arm and wrist. I'm right-handed. This is a problem, as I had an illustration assignment due this week.

Note: "Had" being the key word. I found out this morning that our teacher has pushed the due date back until next Monday. I stayed up all night working on this damn thing. I'm fairly sure I've further injured my arm to the point that it will take at least another week to heal (driving to class this morning was interesting).

I'm displeased.

I'm displeased that we're told of due date changes at the last minute. I'm displeased that the assignments are never elaborated on, and we end up doing tons of half-starts before the teacher decides we've got something she likes. I'm displeased that this class is eating up my free time. I'm displeased that I'm forgoing working on commissions I owe in order to do this crap.

But, most of all, I'm displeased that we end up rushing through assignments and creating work that is sub-par.

Photobucket

Seriously. I would have LOVED a week to get that right. And if she'd let us know about the extension, I would have HAD a week. Damnit.

Sounds like your art teacher is a real winner. I'm not sure why, but about half the art teachers I ever had were jerks and airheads, who were unlikely to mention things like changes in the the due date or what they wanted you to do, precisely.

I wish I could send painfree healing to your injured limb. *hugs*

I really have no idea what to think of her, most of the time. She and I have very different ideas about how to communicate through art, about what is acceptable stylistically (she thought the Kirby dots in the above picture were pointless), and repeatedly asks me to justify my tonal and gradient choices.

I think we just clash badly, in that regard. That doesn't make up for the changing due dates, though.

Still, it works out in my favor, as it gives me more time to finish the picture and maybe go back and fix things that I've messed up on.

My arm thanks you. :3

Kirby dots for magical energy, obvs.

She asks you to "justify" things? That's a little more combative than I'd put up with, and I've had art teachers throw things at my head.

Like... the line shading on the midtones? She made me find examples of it in extant artwork.

I had to Google that because she wouldn't accept it as a "thing" unless she saw someone else had done it, first.

Okayy, first of all, MEDIEVAL WOODCUTS, HELLO! And secondly, this is a woman looking for an innovative artistic genius to stifle and destroy, augh.

Pretty much

I've never seen that. I now suspect it's like that art of The Witches where they turn the little boy into a mouse and try to stomp him.

The hero, the love interest, and the antagonist are all out for a walk. They're all kind've silhouetted against a hill. Everyone is just enjoying nature, and then... The antagonist spots a frog. Really, just a vaguely froglike shape, hopping across the screen. It is followed by the most cartoonish and hilarious stomping, ever. (Funny, of course, only because the frog is so clearly a rubber ball with legs.)

If you've never seen the movie, itself, oh man. Do so. Now. It is... well, some people love it, some hate it. But it's worth seeing.

I'm sorry about all the illustration class displeasure, and injured arm and wrist. :-(

May I say that however much it displeases you, your pic pleases me? I love the way you've subtly created the shape of Beast's body with overlapping roses. And, btw, he's SKEERY!

One of the reasons I'm a little glad about the due date extension is that I can go back and carve out those roses, now. I think they'll look nice all white -- or even red! :3

Do not be afeared of Beast! He's really all squishy inside. Like a Lindt chocolate. X3

You have no idea how pleased I am that you got the picture, right away. My teacher spent the last few class sessions utterly breaking whatever confidence I had in my ability to get a story across. It seemed like no matter what I did, she didn't get it.

This is true! You can haz moar tiem. :D Oooh... red, imho.

As for Beast being squishy and like chocolate, I wholly agree and it may or may not be influenced by a certain actor.....

Don't let that teacher break your confidence. (In reference to your above comments with Eliyes) I believe there are myriad of ways to communicate through Art. Seriously. So, "Thbbbbbbbbbtt!" to your instructor. My daughter has had a similar issue with her high school Art teacher. They just don't get each other--and that's okay. Not everyone gets everyone as we all come from different backgrounds and likes/dislikes. Life. Yes, it is varied and splendorous. If it wasn't, it would be BORING!

And fuzzy! Do not forget fuzzy. :3

They just don't get each other--and that's okay.

As long as the teacher understood that they were coming from two totally different directions, that would be fine. And I certainly hope a teacher working with high schoolers would be able to recognize that.

I think this lady, here, she just can't see beyond her own ideas of "right" and "wrong." I doubt it helps that most of my influence comes from comic books -- pretty much the least desirable medium for a "true ar-teest."

FUZZY! I can't forget that. It's so soft and warm and, and fuzzy!

Actually, at the open house a few weeks ago, there were a few other parents visiting her room when we were. She gave her spiel about curriculum and expectations and then asked if there were questions. The only questions (besides mine--which had to do with portfolios and projects traveling between school and home) were "How can we transfer our child to a different class? Is it too late?"

She's very traditional, dry and straightforward. It's odd. I guess I expected a more eclectic personality. My daughter doesn't dislike her; she's mostly just bored with the text book approach.

I think this lady, here, she just can't see beyond her own ideas of "right" and "wrong."

She's missing out, then. :P

PFFFFT. Well, hopefully that told her something. XD

If it helps any, there are tons of fairly good books that will likely teach your daughter more than any classroom will. Classrooms are good for technique and discussion and little else, I think.

What is your daughter interested in? I might be able to recommend some readings. :3

She's interested in a lot of different things. I'd say that sculpture (of various kinds) is a favorite--with drawing portraits and characters running a close second. :)

[Yes, I edited a very too long previous response. Sorry... :D... I get long-winded sometimes.]
