Further Musical Stuffs: Pimpernel

kiffie"You Are My Home" as a romantic love song is, and probably always will be, made of 100% DO NOT WANT.
I have the concept album, see, and... ah. Ew.
Most of the other songs are nice, though they are very much concept material. This Percy needs about ten cups of coffee to make him sound "right" to me, but then again, I heard Sills first, and that man is a jackrabbit. It's unlikely that anyone else can get that worked up and not be on speed.
I do admit to really, really liking this version of "The Riddle," though. No Percy, just Chauvelin and Marguerite digging into eachother. It's a lot more brutal than the eventual finalized version. It works.
"The Creation of Man," on the other hand, makes me wince. It's close to its final version, but not nearly close enough to be enjoyable. Almost like looking at a car that's still getting Bondo'd. The lyrics have some differences, and I agree with all of the changes made to the Broadway version. This one doesn't flow nearly as nicely. Strangely, they seem to have flip-flopped around on the staging over the years; This one features only the Bounders. The Broadway version was a song to the Prince of Wales, to throw him off the Bounders' scent. Now, in its current version, it's again solely a Bounders song, with Percy riling up his men. Go figure.
I'll probably end up putting this on repeat for a while.
At least it's slowly forcing the creepy, ohgodwhy that was the Dracula concept album out of my head. I like Douglas Sills. I do. But I never, ever want to hear him singing about eating people, ever again. D:

Date: 2010-08-13 03:05 am (UTC)In the Broadway version, it's, obviously, about sibling affection, and so the concept version retroactively squicks me. Also, newer versions of the show have given the song to Marguerite and Percy as a wedding song, and have only let Armand and Marguerite sing it as a reprise. This... actually bothers me more. It makes Armand seem desperately clingy and possessive, which he kind've is, but not nearly to the degree that the song implies. Also, the tone of the song doesn't fit for Percy and Marguerite, but that's a whole 'nother rant.
As for Dracula -- Douglas Sills already reminds me of a shark. This album does not help. D:

Dahahaha... I always kind of thought a big giant rat. (Hate to say it but he sorta looks like Sir Basil of Bakers Street.) But ahahaha... XD

Date: 2010-08-13 03:34 am (UTC)The Armand I'm referring to here is Marguerite's brother, not Armand Chauvelin. Armand is kidnapped and held as bait to catch the Pimpernel near the end of the play. Marguerite goes to save him and gets captured, herself. Percy, seeing the massive clusterfuck, facepalms and then saves everybody. Everybody lives happily ever after.
...well, except for Chauvelin. It's pretty heavily implied that he goes off for a one-night-stand with Madame Guillotine for failing so badly.
Is it bad that I'd totally watch a Disney-style Pimpernel where Percy was a mouse? (Even though, admittedly, I always figured a big, stupid cat of some sort for the character, though not necessarily any of the actors who've played him.)
