Voodoo went into the shop today to check on the shuddering.

It progressed from rocking/swaying, where it had been holding for a week or so, to full on bucking and shuddering in three days. It got so bad that getting into the garage was a chore. The trans simply wouldn't stay in reverse or first long enough to let me maneuver in.

The verdict?

Loose fly wheel.

On the upside, it's not the engine mounts. On the downside, I have no idea how much this will cost.

A least it happened at home.

Poor Voodoo. He spends a lot of time in the car hospital, doesn't he? :(

The car is old, and that's part of it, but a lot of this recent stuff is from a rear-end collision last Christmas. It screwed up a lot of things. Some of the stuff simply hasn't shown up yet. You'd be amazed how long a VW can go with an injury without seeming "sick," then all of a sudden the offending part simply shatters and the car breaks down.

Do they have to replace the fly wheel, or just make an adjustment so the one you have is no longer loose...?

I don't know. If the flywheel is simply loose, they'll just tighten it. If it's cracked, though...
