So Floormate and I were talking a few days before break started. We both want to go to the Pirates 3 premiere at the Fremont, in costume.
So, because Kiffies can never do anything half-assed (unless it's a school assignment), she's trying to get a good idea of what, and what isn't, plausible for a costume.
Found a relatively cheap tricorn hat on the internets, but it's black. Would prefer a brown one. Need a brown vest, some brown breeches, and stockings. Don't think there's any way I could get pirate-y boots unless a Ren Faire were to come to town between now and then, so will be internet-ninjaing to try and find some bargains.
Don't really go for swords, myself, so I was looking at a musket. Not a real one, mind, but that's where PVC pipe comes in. It is your friend. The only thing that scares me is the detail I'd need to put into it. And possibly the size. (Because I've tried to steady the Remington and it is large and not fun and is made of ohgod and D:) And a musket is less likely to get me into trouble like a pistol would. I mean, you pull a pistol or wave one around, people get edgy. It's easier to see that a musket is fake. And, you know... photo opportunities. :D
Thought about getting the nice brass compass from Smoke and Fire Trading Co. to wear as a necklace, but why spend $20 on something that is more than likely going to get broken? If I bought it, I'm not sure I could wear it as an accessory. Maybe some wooden beads or something similar? And rings. Ahaha, I have rings that are made from old spoon handles. Yes. I could wear those! :D
Okay, rant over. :3

Date: 2006-12-19 09:01 am (UTC)Make sure at least some of your beads are fancy glass "trade beads", and maybe some carved shell if you can get it. Do put heavy eyeliner on; there's actually a historical reason for the make-up, that being that sailors put kohl around their eyes to protect the sensitive flesh there from salt and rough wind.
If you've got thick gold hoop earrings, wear 'em. That tradition started so that if a sailor's body washed up on shore, the gold could be used to pay for a funeral. (If the person fidning the body didn't just steal them.)
Most tricorns would have been black anyway. Why did you want brown?

Date: 2006-12-20 02:50 am (UTC)I know about the white shirt thing. But unbleached cotton or wool is either tan or gray, so maybe I could BS it that way. Although, a bright-coloured shirt would be very silly indeed. An option.
Ah, yes. "Trade beads". I have some, somewhere. If not, I can get some from the Museum of Natural History gift shop. They have many kinds! The eyeliner is another story. I remember putting some on and it frikkin' BURNED. As in, I ran off, screaming, because it was eating my eyemeets. D:
Earrings? Don't have pierced ears.
I want brown because black hats are hell to take care of, and generally are either very dark red or very dark green, but never black. Brown is also easier to distress in a hurry. But, do you really think a black tricorn is best?

Wear kittens?
*pierces Kiffie* There! Now you can afford a funeral, and... wait, no. Well, lots of necklaces or whatnot, then.
I think it's up to you in the hat department. Let me just say that all the people who dress as pirates around her - at the maritime museum, and in general, and you'd be surprised how many there are - tend to go with black (felt) or (the more expensive at the time period) dark blue (felt) [ooooh]
