Battle Hymn was absolutely amazing.

I read it on the way home from Union Station. Wow. I didn't want to put it down to go into the house. It was... sad. And funny. And very well-written.

Oh, where to begin?

Quinn Rey.

He's really the only character in the book that I wouldn't have minded (is that even a word?) an entire series about. Most of the others had semi-contained stories that left me satisfied, but Quinn Rey... Damn. It must have been his attitude. Like a cat. Stand-offish and not giving a flying fuck, and hey, who doesn't secretly want to tie a camera to their cats when they go out for the night? That's how I felt about him. Add in the fact that who he is or where he's from is never addressed, and you've got a Kiffie that demands more.

Too bad he turned up as a deep-fried Twinkie at the end of the book. That and, you know, finding out his girlfriend slept with everyone.

The book itself is wonderful. The story is paced well, though the very end feels rushed. But I think that may have been because of its status as a miniseries. Without adding another chapter to the book, there would have been no way to preserve the feel and space it out at the same time.

The ending made me very sad -- everyone dies, save for the Midnite Hour, and the last three go out rather gruesomely. The panel of the Proud American, Artificial Man, and Quinn Rey being torn apart by the atomic blast was pretty powerful. But it was Midnite Hour, sitting on the bow of the ship, seeing Quinn Rey come up out of the water, his skin sloughing off... that was a kick in the face. Holy shit.

I know that they were planning a sequel, but now that I've read it, I can only ask "how?"

How do you follow that act?
