kiffie: Animated gif of Sir Percy Blakeney, smiling. (Percy)
This will be quick, because I've been on the road a total of 14 hours in the past three days, and am exhausted.

[livejournal.com profile] random_redshirt and I went down to Escondito (read: San Diego) to see The Scarlet Pimpernel. It was absolutely amazing.

The sets and costumes were wonderful, but oh MAN, the cast was GREAT. The Percy (my booklet thingy says the actor is named "Allan Snyder") was beyond awesome. He hit every mark and looked like he was having the time of his life up on stage. He also held a long-note at the end of "She Was There" that made me very happy, indeed. Mwee. Marguerite was equally as good, though this version of the play (the revised, tour version) didn't allow her the chance to try her hand at "Vivez," which I believe she would have owned entirely. Chauvelin stood out only because the other two were so utterly superb. He wasn't bad by any stretch -- he sang his songs consistently, had wonderful chemistry with both Marguerite and Percy, and made one of the best "dear God get it away from me" faces I have ever seen. But he kept a considerable amount of emotion out of his songs, especially "Falcon in the Dive" and the reprise of "Where's The Girl," both of which call for force and anger and copious amounts of crazy to come out in the voice. But it clearly wasn't for lack of talent. The initial rendition of "Where's The Girl" was beautiful.

The Bounders were, aside from Percy, the most entertaining thing on stage. They were cast well and all were strong actors and singers. Ozzy and Elton stood out by being just over-the-top enough to get laughs without edging into ridiculousness... well, more ridiculousness, anyway. Elton did spend a large part of the play in bright yellow.

Ending thought: If you are in the area, GO SEE IT.

You will not be disappointed. :3
