The books are not nailed/stapled/taped/glued in any way. Neither is the hammer. Both are balanced.
The books took quite a few tries, as very few are the correct sizes to work well with one another. The hammer is connected to the ruler (the brown, cork-backed thing), which is in turn balanced on the dowel. It's holding itself to the ruler via a hairtie and nothing more.
