I know that [livejournal.com profile] lilyprodigious is considering Davis next year, and I found this page on the UC Davis website that might be helpful in considering a bike:

"The best advice is saved for last: Thieves' favorite targets are expensive, high-quality mountain bikes. This is so obvious, yet too many Davis cyclists persist in riding such "thief-magnets" for daily commuting in a town where distances are short, terrain is flat, and a high-dollar, 21-speed, all-terrain bike is really out of place. Even if theft weren't an issue, why put that daily wear and tear on such a bike? Get a "beater bike"... for around-town use. Sure, it could also get stolen, but consider the comparative loss." (from 'Bicycle Theft Prevention')

A local Davis repair shop does hold bike auctions every so often to sell off 'unwanted' bikes at low prices. If you do get a nice bike but don't want to risk it in town, perhaps getting a workhorse at the auction might be a good bet.
