GIP: Because Why Not
Made for an RP journal, but I like it enough that I think I'll use it here, too*.
Cropped from Invaders: NOW! #1.
*Because, chances are, I'll never have time to really use it for RP, anyway.

Mmmm.... marshmallows....
Okay, so, movie coming out about a squadron? battalion? flight? of all-black pilots in WWII. Gonna watch?
(Gonna fic Steve & Sam watching?)no subject
Red Tails! random_redshirt and I have been anticipating the hell out of that movie since it was announced.
And not just because Cuba Gooding, Jr. -- rawr!I'll probably go see it opening weekend. :3Oh, man, Steve and Sam -- they'd both be fanboying the crap out of it, and then Sam would likely have insta-jealousy, because Steve probably met the squadron at least once. (Ultimate Cap, at least, had a picture with them that he guarded like gold; a bit odd, given that Ult!Cap is a racist asshole, but I guess even a jackass can have a bright side?)

I thought you'd probably be interested~
Cuba Gooding, Jr. is how I found out about it -- I noticed his picture when I was flipping past the movie stuff in the paper looking for a sudoku puzzle to do. XDI don't know if I'll see it in theatre, but I'll probably watch it eventually. :3You could be right. I found a notebook of mine recently, from... I don't recall right now what class, but there were several pages of notes aobut attitudes towards race in the 1940s USA (more white-supremacist than the 1900s!) and how that translated into troops. Like for instance white men who were fathers or ineligible due to physical health being snapped up by the military when eligible black men who had tried to join the military where turned down, despite the need for troops. Some "scientific" studies had come out around then, "proving" blacks were not as intelligent as whites, and hereditarily lazy. That kind of shit. Black soldiers were therefore put into seperate units, and they got a lot more training before they were fielding (since people thought they were stupid and thus needed it) which ironically meant they usually ended up as elite units. Meanwhile, to the people in those islands in the Pacific that saw both Japanese and American troops occupy their land, the American troops seemed like bastions of equality, because even though the white and blacks bivoacked seperately in camps, they had the same kind of tents and the same equipment.
Steve's "colour blindness" really is extraordinary for his time. Which makes him all the more lovable. I've been thinking of writing a story set in WWII where he (as dopey Army Ranger Private Steve Rogers, or as Cap) encounters one of these elite all-black units and perplexes them with his attitude. The only thing stopping me has been the massive amount of research I'd need to do to do the idea justice.

Some other time, mah ely.

(I had a teacher over summer quarter that fairly idolized them -- the look in his eyes when he was talking about the squadron, you'd think he'd been given a puppy! It was adorable to see a 70+ year old man with that look on his face, let me tell you.)

Steve's an anomaly regardless of time period, just for that reason. He honestly cannot fathom treating someone differently because of something as simple as skin color (or any other physical or ideological issue, really). The issue in a fic would have to be tread carefully, though, especially when in regards to troops who were marginalized and discriminated against by practically everyone else. *thinks* That'd be a metric been-ton of research, mah ely. But it would be worth it, I think. (And damn fascinating!)

Oh, it would be many many beens of research. I think you'd basically have a bachelor's degree by the end of it, which intimidates me.

"And what is your degree in?"
"History!"
Hm.

While it wasn't the best war movie I've ever seen, it was none-the-less good and I encourage you to see it as soon as you can. Bring tissues, though -- I was crying within the first five minutes.

...Y'know, I would have a great use for that magical item in my life, it's true.
