According to the folks at antiqueguns.com:

It is just a normal good quality Damascus Twist barrel made by hammer welding coils of twisted iron and steel rods round a mandrel to make the tube which is then struck up and polished so that when it is stained by the browning process the pattern in the metal becomes visible. It was the normal way of making barrels until the end of the 19th century.

My inner machine geek just had a joygasm. Seriously.

So that pattern on the barrel is because it had an awesome method of maufacture. I am of the glee-kittens.
