For the Curious...
Frankie's still hanging on.
He officially finished a 5-day medicine round today that treated for dropsy and a nematode infection. I changed his water, got a few glass squares to replace the old cardboard-and-cellophane tank lid, and then tried to feed him.
He still can't eat.
The swelling from the dropsy's gone down, but perhaps not enough. He got the food in his mouth and chewed, but it came back out a moment later. He went after a few more pellets, but the same thing happened each time. It's been exactly one week since he last kept food down. If he doesn't eat soon, it could be bad.
Further, he's also got some sort of bruising and/or blood blistering going on with his face, as well as hemorrhaging in his tail. I'm hoping this is simply an after-effect of the all-day flaring spree he had during his medical quarantine, but it's looking a little bit like hemorrhagic septicemia, caused by opportunistic bacteria that prey on immunocompromised fish. Think hemorrhagic fever, but not nearly so immediate-- or pleasant --in the death department.
All I can do now is keep his water clear and warm and hope he has enough fight left in him to catch the infection before it gets to anything vital. But as he's still dealing with near-total kidney failure, I'm not sure this will end well.
