Keaton, who seemed like he was trying to play the better side of the comic book Batman while being stuck in Tim Burton's world.

That -- is probably THE most apt description of where that film fell down in terms of Batman I have ever seen.

Of course, the main issue with all of those (possibly excluding Batman Begins, which I haven't yet seen) is that they focussed on the villains instead of Batman. :(
