It's becomming more common.

And... well, they COULD use a suction hose. But most newer cars? You can't do that to. So they might just assume that you can't do it to Ghias, either, and go straight for the drillin'. :/

You wanna know something really weird? Somebody caught on video kids in South America who would glom themselves on the backsides of moving Beetles so they could rip off the oil coolers from under the engines. Most of the kids who did it were addicts to sniffing glue, and stole the parts for money to feed their habits. This was in the late Eighties or early Nineties before the new Beetle came along.
